Recruitment accounted for just under one third of all UK online adspend in the first half of 2008, making it the medium's largest single advertising category, according to data released by the Internet Advertising Bureau in conjunction with PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Online advertising generated £1.68bn in the first six months of this year, with recruitment responsible for 32.9%, or £553.5m, of this total up from 24.7% in the same period in 2007.
The automotive category provided some 13% of revenue, up 0.5% on 2007, with the property market almost doubling its total share from 5.7% to 11.1% year on year.
Finance, however, fell from 11.1% in the first six months of last year to just 6.2% for 2008 so far, with the technology sector also down from 11.1% to 9.4% in the same period.
In terms of display advertising, however, technology had the largest single share (17.3%), followed by finance (11.9%), entertainment and media (10.7%) and recruitment (9.9%).
