The latest RAJAR figures for Q1 2010 sees radio listening reach an all time high as 46.5m adults are tuning into radio each week - All Commercial Radio now reaches around 32.2m listeners – which is up 2.1 yoy. All BBC also had a good first quarter with weekly reach up 3.2% yoy to around 35m listeners.
All Commercial's share of listening dropped by 0.3 % yoy inQ1, hitting 41.3%. It was also down period on period by 1.3%. All BBC's saw their total share of listening increase and now stands at 56.5%.
The average number of hours each listener spent listening to radio was down for both All BBC and All Commercial yoy, 4.1% and 3.7% respectively. All Commercial listening now stands at 13 hours per listener per week.
Looking at the national stations BBC Radio 2 remains the national station with the highest weekly reach. It has enjoyed both yoy (6%) and QoQ (9%) increases with around 14.5m listeners.
Of the commercial nationals, Classic FM still remains above competition reaching 5.5m listeners weekly (QoQ increase of 7.4%).
talk SPORT has had a disappointing Rajar it suffered both yoy (2%) and QoQ (5%) declines to below 2.5m listeners.
Absolute Radio has suffered a fall in reach of 17.5% yoy and 6.5% from the previous quarter.
In London, Magic 105.4 (2m listeners) has regained it’s number 1 position, followed by Capital Radio (1.9m) and Heart 106.2 FM (1.8m).
In Breakfast radio Chris Evans on Radio 2 has had a stellar result, achieving an average weekly reach of 9.5m listeners, up from Wogan's 8.1m before Christmas. Johnny Vaughan's Capital Radio breakfast show remains out in front in London in terms of weekly reach, despite posting a 5.6% QoQ, it now has a reach of over 1.1m listeners.
DAB set ownership increased by 9% yoy, with 17.7m adults aged 15+ now claiming to live in a household which has a DAB receiver.
DAB listening commands a 15.1% share of all radio listening according to the latest data, up 20% yoy. Total hours spent listening to radio via DAB increased by 17 hours on Q4 2009, to 153 hours.
Share of radio listening via any digital platform increased 19% on last year to 24%, while listening to the radio via a digital platform in terms of weekly reach has also increased, up 15% yoy to 19.7m people.
Radio listening via mobile phone remains steady with 12.6% of adults aged 15+ in Q1 2010 claiming to have listened to radio via their mobile phone.
