ABC Newspaper Round-Up: March 2010 - 26/04/2010
Daily Newspaper Market
The daily national newspaper market was down 5.4% yoy in March, although it recorded a 0.5% month on month (mom) increase.
It was a tough month for both the Guardian and Times, down 17% and 16.3% yoy respectively. The Daily Telegraph and Independent were both down by around 10% yoy, although they managed to record slight mom increases. Both The Scotsman and The Herald recorded yoy declines of 7.3% and 6.7% respectively.
The Daily Express was down 7.9% yoy, to around 668,000, while the Daily Mail's circulation dipped 3% over the year, leaving its circulation at around 2m.
It was a good month for the popular titles when comparing mom figures. The Daily Mirror was up 1% mom (-6.9% yoy), to 1.2m, while the Daily Record was up 1.6% mom (-7% yoy) to 333,000. Up 02.9% mom (9% yoy), the Daily Star now has a circulation of 827,000 copies. The Sun was back past the 3m mark in March following a 1.1% mom increase.
Sunday Newspaper Market
The Sunday national newspaper market recorded a dip of 6.6% overall yoy.
The Observer suffered the largest yoy decline, of 23.1%, it now has a circulation of under 332,000 copies. The Independent on Sunday recorded a 0.9% mom fall in its circulation in March. The Sunday Times also saw its total dip by 0.9% mom (-10.4% yoy). The Sunday Herald was the only paper to record an annual increase of 4.6%.
The Mail on Sunday now has a circulation of 1.9m after a mom fall of 1.3%, while fellow the Sunday Express fell 0.9% to 570,000.
In the popular sector, the Daily Star Sunday and the People were both down by around 1.5% mom, leaving their circulation totals at around 342,000 and 532,000 respectively. Following a 3% mom decline, the News of the World now has a circulation of 2.9m, almost 2m copies ahead of the Mail on Sunday. The Sunday Mirror, meanwhile, lost 0.8% of its circulation total mom, leaving it at around 1.1m.
